After routing around Europe in winter for a while, I’m glad to be back in the tropical Medan – the fourth largest city in Indonesia. Nothing against the rest of Indonesia, I can easily sum up Medan as the best place for culinary indulgence, I shall explain more in my next post.
It was a huge relief to have my partner in crime to explore Lake Toba, the largest lake in Indonesia and the largest volcanic lake in the world. Though it is approximately 3.5 hours away from Medan, Lake Toba is so identical to North Sumatera. This is something you don’t want to miss during your trip to the island of Sumatera.
There are a few great spots to enjoy Lake Toba to the fullest:
1. Taman Simalem Resort, easily the best spot for aerial view of Lake Toba, so get your camera ready!
2. Parapat, a city by the edge of Lake Toba, so beautiful that it is a holiday attraction itself.
3. Samosir Island, a one hour’s ferry ride away from Parapat, get yourself a shot of the “magic mushroom” inside the pizza!
Remember to take a trip down the Sipiso Piso waterfall in the northern tip of Lake Toba! Challenge yourself to take a couple more hikes up and down for the spectacular view. And just so you know, mosquito repellent is a must!
On a low note, preservation of the environment must be done with immediate effect to prevent further deterioration. I recall, Lake Toba used to be a lot more pure and scenic before the pollution. Still, spending a great weekend in the congested traffic in Medan is a pleasure to the heart and soul.
