Not many people expect the unexpectables in North Sumatra, such as having a beautiful pagoda in the middle of nowhere. Believe it or not, some of the locals are barely aware of the existence of “Taman Alam Lumbini”, even with its close proximity to Medan – one of the busiest ports in Indonesia.

It’s an open secret, “Taman Alam Lumbini” is a replica of “Shwedagon Pagoda” in Yangon, Myanmar. Though the golden-decorated temple is half the size of the original, it still came through as a surprise for me. After this road trip, Myanmar is definitely under my radar.

  1. Yes, you should put Myanmar in your list, and you have to go there fast before mass tourism changes a lot of things. I went to Yangon only a few months after the country launched the unprecedented reforms, and Shwedagon was magnificent!
