If Brussels and Antwerp are too cosmopolitan for you, Bruges might be the next best escapade. Approximately 1 hour away from either of the above-mentioned cities, Bruges truly lives up to its reputation as the ‘Venice of Belgium’. Personally, I feel there is significant resemblance between Bruges and Venice. While the latter is often portrayed to be more extravagant with its celebrated architectures, Bruges is much less commercialized.
In Bruges, walking along the cobblestone pavements and soaking up the atmosphere under the warm sunshine is just a natural choice to enjoy the picture perfect city. For some EUR 7, you can take pleasure in a 30 minutes canal ride around Bruges. Horse drawn carts are also available for leisure rides. The Church of Our Lady, the Market Square and Bruges’s canals are some of the landmarks not to be missed!
Lastly, do not leave Bruges without indulging yourselves in the many shapes and sizes of chocolates, waffles with different toppings, and irresistible oysters. While I do feel that the standard of living in Bruges is slightly on the high side, I suggest just relaxing and indulging. It is a holiday after all!
