Volendam
Volendam, 20 km away from Amsterdam, holds a totally different atmosphere. The capital city of Amsterdam is developing so fast that it might lose the traditional touch of Holland. On the other hand, Volendam offers a preserved look of a former fishing market with variety of fresh seafood to choose from. Some might fancy a photo taking session in traditional Dutch costumes or indulge themselves with assortment of cheeses. Bus #110 connects Amsterdam and Volendam with just a 30-minute ride, and the small neighborhood is best explored by foot.
Marken
Decorated in green or black painted wood houses, Marken is a popular spot for day-trippers. The wooden shoe factory showcases complete set of nice local souvenirs might be one of its popular attractions. On a beautiful sunny day, riding a bike is a wonderful way to enjoy the landscape. Bus #111 connects Amsterdam and Marken in a 40-minute ride, or, a 30-minute ferry ride from Volendam runs every 30 minutes.
Zaanse Schans
Netherlands is never complete without a visit to their iconic windmills. From Amsterdam, the closest functional windmills are found in Zaanse Schans. Though it can get overcrowded during summer, it is well paid off with the picturesque landscape. And don’t forget to take a tour inside one of the functional windmills to get a perspective of its function. Bus #391 connects Amsterdam and Zaanse Schans in just a 45-minute ride. Enjoy!
